Six perfect destinations for an autumn escape

With fewer crowds, cooler weather, and bright colours, Autumn is a beautiful season to visit cities that are more crowded in the summer. Here is some quick travel inspiration to help you make the most of Fall.

Amsterdam

The more than 400,000 trees in Amsterdam turn to gold and copper during this time of year, making walks through the city’s many parks and canal boat rides a treat. Stop along the way and treat yourself to a generous slice of Dutch apple pie and a warm beverage.

More than 60 of the city’s museums stay up late—open to 2:00 am—during Museum Night on Saturday, 5 November. Special programmes, music, and light shows accompany the festivities.

Autumn is also cinema time in Amsterdam, with outdoor film events and film festivals for children and adults.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar: Sinterklaas comes to town on 14 November.

Bruges

Enjoy charming autumn days in Bruges. Enjoy a walk through cobblestone streets and the City Ramparts, visit the squares and parks, or take a boat tour in the sunshine to enjoy the fall colours. You’ll find a wealth of Instagrammable spots. If it drizzles, enjoy a beverage in the cafes or pubs, and explore the Gruuthuse museum. Don’t miss the nighttime concerts and cultural events throughout the city.

Venture further out to get in touch with nature. For some time travel, try the Three Castles walking route, past the castles of Tillegem, Tudor and Beisbroek. Or go shell hunting through the beach of Zeebrugge. Around All Souls Day, visit the 12-hectare Central Cemetery in Assebroek, within walking distance of Bruges city centre. View the historic tombs surrounded by ancient trees.

Malaga

As summer's steam dissipates, autumn is an ideal time to visit Malaga. The clear skies and perfect weather invite exploration. Take a stroll along Muelle Uno or at the top of Gibralfaro Castle to enjoy breathtaking views. There is a packed calendar of artistic, sporting, fashion, and cultural events throughout the Costa del Sol region this time of year.

Be sure to enjoy the fruits of the season. Castañas (chestnuts) are plentiful, and you can enjoy them roasted on virtually every corner. You can also delight in grapes, figs, custard apples, persimmons and more at the historic Atarazanas market.

Don’t miss a traditional sweet treat! Rest your feet at Casa Aranda in Calle Herrería del Rey to enjoy some churros and chocolate. Or stop by Casa Aranda in Calle Santos before a visit to the Carmen Thyssen Museum.

Japan

If you’re interested in venturing further, you’ll find a veritable bounty of autumn colours in Japan. The maple and ginkgo trees turn gold and bright red, and seasonal flowers bloom in many colours across the country.

Book a comfortable private flight and enjoy the bustling metropolis of Tokyo. Visit the traditional Rikugien Garden to take in its full fall splendour.

Go to Lake Kawaguchiko, at the base of Mt. Fuji, where the mountain’s reflection graces the still lake waters. Crimson trees dot the lake’s banks and the surrounding landscape.

Kyoto is also an ideal destination with its lush gardens and temples, like Kiyomizudera Temple, glowing in autumn colours.

New York

Book a flight to New York and get in some Christmas shopping, enjoy the Thanksgiving Day parade in Manhattan, catch a show on Broadway, and enjoy the colours in Central Park. Drive upstate, and rich forests of gold and red will surround you. The tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) is dotted with charming towns to explore at leisure. Stop along the way to pick apples, take a hayride, or enjoy a host of autumnal fairs and activities.

Warmer Weather

Get away from Autumn’s nippy winds; bask in the sun instead.

Try Los Cabos, Mexico, at the tip of the Baja California peninsula. Enjoy the jewel-toned waters and stunning landscapes with a private sailing tour, take to the desert on a dune buggy, or enjoy a hike through the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. Book a stay at one of the private resorts or boutique hotels and let the full-service spas pamper you.

Venture to Mauritius to delight in its natural treasures, take to the crystalline waters to explore the Cathedral Dive site or hire a catamaran for the day, do a little snorkelling, and keep an eye out for whales and dolphins.
