Plan Your May Escape to Lake Como for Classic Cars and Boundless Beauty

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, which dates back to 1929 and was revived in the 1990s, celebrates classic automobile design and originality. Visitors can view some 50 Historic Cars built between the 1920s and today in different categories. A panel of experts, led by President Lorenzo Ramaciotti, judges the cars to select the Best of Show prize, the BMW Group Trophy.

The Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como, which also celebrates its 150th anniversary as a hotel this year, offers the traditional Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este prize of the Concorso decided by a public vote.

A prize, introduced in 2002, is awarded for the contemporary Concept Car. It harkens back to the origins of the Concorso, where designers and automobile companies presented their visionary designs. Some of the Concept Cars & Prototypes showcased make their world debut at Lake Como, and the award winner is elected by public vote at the Villa Erba on Sunday.

The programme includes RM Sotheby’s auction of cars at Villa Erba on Saturday, May 20.

The Villa D’Este is located on the southwest end of the lake, near Como. The city’s many squares, Romanesque and Gothic-style churches, other historic buildings, and shopping and dining options make this a pleasant excursion for those with a day or two to spare.
