Solar Impulse 2 sets off around the world
Since the Solar Impulse prototype undertook its maiden flight way back in 2009, it has gone on to break 8 different world records in what should already be considered an outstanding achievement. However, now comes the final phase of the adventure and the aircraft’s true test. The fixed-wing single-seat monoplane has left Abu Dhabi with the hope of returning there in 5 months time having completed a circumnavigation of the Northern Hemisphere in what would be the most ground-breaking aeronautical achievement of our time.
The Solar Impulse project is led by Swiss businessman and pilot André Borschberg and Swiss psychiatrist and aeronaut Bertrand Piccard, who has exploration in his blood and was the first man to complete a non-stop hot air balloon flight around the globe. The privately financed project has created a remarkable feat of engineering in Solar Impulse 2, which, weighing just 2.3 tonnes, is the world’s only airplane of perpetual endurance that can operate both day and night using only solar power. The team aim to ‘demonstrate how pioneering spirit, innovation and clean technologies can change the world’ by achieving what most experts told them was nothing more than a pipe dream in an attempt to contribute to a more sustainable world.
At LunaJets, we love this kind of innovation and we make sure we are always up-to-date with the latest advances in the industry. Before returning to Abu Dhabi in late August or early September, the Solar Impulse 2 route include stops in Oman, China and even New York City, among a number of other locations, some of which may vary depending on weather conditions. LunaJets is offering exclusive prices on private jets to any of these locations so that you can see this astounding feat of engineering for yourself. Alternatively, book your private flight to Abu Dhabi for the return of Solar Impulse 2 and witness a momentous occasion that will go down in history.
